New fireproof clothing should be made of kelp

on October 10, the reporter learned from the fourth science and Technology Conference of Qingdao University that the “marine biomass fiber new material” project of Qingdao University has built an 800 ton annual production line in Chengyang District this year, which extracts sodium alginate from kelp to make fiber. These fibers will be made into comfortable, breathable and fireproof clothing fabrics

according to Quan Fengyu, a teacher from the school of chemistry, chemical engineering and environment, Qingdao University, the raw material used in the project is giant algae, which is kelp usually seen at the seaside. Nowadays, some of the clothes people wear are made of synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers need to be extracted from limited resources such as oil and coal, which is easy to cause waste of resources. Even natural fibers made of cotton, hemp, silk and wool need a certain area of land for the growth of their raw materials. The new material team of marine biomass fiber chooses to march into the ocean, which not only saves energy and protects the environment, but also produces calcium alginate fiber with better flame retardancy and tensile strength than cotton, which is especially suitable for military special clothing, and may become the clothing surface material for ordinary citizens in the future

the reporter saw in the laboratory of Qingdao University that the calcium alginate fiber is milky white and silky, with a handle similar to that of cotton and a soft and delicate texture. 1t is understood that the clothing fabric made of this kind of fiber has better comfort, air permeability and handle than cotton fabric, and also has good flame retardancy. The staff picked up a handful of fibers and ignited them with a lighter. The lighted part turned black, but as soon as they left the fire source, the fire on the fibers immediately went out and would not continue to burn

since this year, the project team has built a production line with an annual output of 800 tons in Chengyang District, and the calcium alginate fiber produced will be made into clothing fabrics in succession. The project can not only drive seaweed breeding, fiber, textile and other industries, form a new industrial chain and economic growth point, but also be conducive to the development of marine resources, energy conservation and environmental protection

it is reported that at present, Qingdao University has been approved 122 scientific research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial level, and the number of national level projects has increased by 36% compared with 2010; 11 scientific research and innovation platforms, 1 municipal engineering technology research center and 2 municipal key laboratories have been approved. The scientific research department of the university has been awarded the “11th Five Year Plan” excellent scientific and technological management team by the Ministry of education, and the advanced scientific research management unit by the Department of education of Shandong Province
